Product Details

Scope

Hose specified shall be manufactured to the highest quality and craftsman- ship. Hose shall be built for superior performance on the fi reground, with firefighter safety at the forefront. Hose shall meet the NFPA 1961 and UL-19 standards. The hose shall be free from defects in materials and workmanship.

Jackets

The inner hose jacket shall be made with 100% filament polyester warp and weft yarn. The outer jacket shall be made with virgin spun polyester warp yarn and a minimum of 10 filament polyester weft yarn picks per inch (394 per Meter). Outer jacket shall have two 5/8” (16 mm) wide red stripes, ¼” (6 mm) apart running the full length. The outer jacket shall also have patented Breather™ technology created by sections of heavy gauge filament polyester yarn. This unique construction must provide increased flexibility, superior packability, greater strength, ease of air evacuation and added visibility. The outer jacket shall be impregnated in one of the standard NFPA colors with high performance polymeric dispersion.

Lining

The lining (waterway) must be made from polyurethane and must be applied using a fused process that welds the polyurethane directly to the textile while the hose is being woven, without the use of adhesives or hot melt. The fused lining process must create a virtually inseparable unit without the use of adhesives, yielding an extremely low friction (pressure) loss by filling in the corrugations of the weave, creating an ultra thin and smooth waterway. Fire hose made using adhesives of any type do not meet this specification. The lining shall be approved for use with potable water.

ADHESION

The adhesion shall be such that the rate of separation of a 1 ½” / 38mm strip of polyurethane, transversely cut, shall not be greater than 1/4” / 6mm per minute under a weight of 12 lbs / 5.5 kg.

FLOW & FRICTION LOSS

The hose must be capable of delivering targeted flows between 210 – 300 GPM / 795 – 1136 LPM. When requested, a chart of friction loss test results shall be provided to the customer. Online calculator available at KnowYourHose.com

KINK TEST

HIGH PRESSURE: A full length shall withstand, without damage, a hydrostatic pressure of 600 psi / 4140 kPa while kinked.

LOW PRESSURE: The hose shall not kink when formed into a 26” / 66 cm wide loop (outside measure) at 60 psi / 415 kPa internal water pressure.

COUPLING SPECIFICATION

Must come standard with Black anodized couplings. The female coupling shall have at least 3 reflective arrows, in order to be visible from any position.

The reflective arrows must be recessed below the surface of the coupling, to resist abrasion. The arrows must point in the direction of the water source for a standard hose connection. The male coupling and female swivel nut must both have a recessed area to facilitate color and bar coding and/or identification markings.

Must be available with both 1 ½” / 38mm and 2 ½” / 64mm couplings

  • The 1 ½” / 38mm coupling must be a 3 part coupling for lighter weight.
  • The 2 ½” / 64mm coupling must have a protective shoulder that protects the male threads from damage. This 2 ½” / 64mm coupling set must not weigh more than 1.8 lbs / 0.82 kg (less expansion rings).

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the KrakenEXO SUPER II unique?

Mercedes Textiles engineered the KrakenEXO SUPER II to answer the challenges of the using the 2.5" line in modern firefighting. SUPER II can deliver the same flow (285 GPM) with up to 30% less weight via a more manageable diameter for a handline (2.15" dry / 2.25" charged).

In order to hit the high flows needed to knock out hotter, faster-burning fires, firefighters were having to pull heavy, stiff lines. That effort costs seconds of time and endurance. The KrakenEXO SUPER II offers a lighter, more flexible and maneuverable alternative without sacrificing performance and quality. Time to fight the fire, not the hose.

Is the KrakenEXO SUPER II a hybrid size, like other 2.25" fire hose?

Yes, but no. Yes – SUPER II is an oversized 2" hose to allow for higher flows without unnecessary water weight. The internal diameter is 2.25" when fully charged. However, the dry ID falls within the nominal difference allowed by the NFPA to still qualify as a 2" hoseline (2.15")

How does the KrakenEXO SUPER II compare to a standard 2" hose?

The KrakenEXO SUPER II is an oversize 2" hose – meaning it has a larger internal diameter than a standard 2". This is what allows it to reach higher flows, like 265 GPM, without sacrificing performance and friction loss. Our standard KrakenEXO 2" has a charged ID of 2.17" whereas SUPER II has an ID of 2.25" (at 150 PSI).

This difference in size also affects weights. KrakenEXO 2" weighs 17 lbs dry uncoupled and 97 lbs charged to 100 PSI. SUPER II weighs in at 19.8 lbs dry uncouples and 106.5 lbs charged to 100 PSI.

If you currently run 2" lines, the SUPER II may not be the best choice as an alternative. It was designed primarily for applications currently running 2.5" lines and requiring flows that are higher than 200 GPM.

What kind of fire hose does Mercedes Textiles manufacture?

Mercedes Textiles specializes in manufacturing premium double-jacket polyurethane fire hose. The inner jacket features our unique Mertex® lining — not EDM/rubber or nitrile — for unrivaled performance and superior quality.

From the hydrant to the nozzle, Mercedes manufactures both supply and attack fire hose in all standard sizes. We're known for our legendary KrakenEXO line, but we offer other quality lines for a variety of applications and priorities. We've got the hose you need, guaranteed.

All Mercedes hose and couplings are manufactured in North America.

What is Mertex® lining and how does it affect friction loss in fire hose?

Mercedes Textiles developed a patented weave process for our Mertex® inner hose linings. We weave a molten lining material directly into the fabric jacket at the loom. This offers a superior waterway — free from adhesives, glues or other bonding agents. The smoother surface minimizes turbulence and friction to deliver greater water flow at the discharge end. Mertex® lining also ensures your hose will never delaminate!

What does the patented Breather™ Technology stripes on the hose do?

Mercedes Textiles' patented BreatherTechnology is an exclusive weave process that releases trapped air and water for superior packability, while also adding flexibility and strength. We currently incorporate these exclusive stripes into our large diameter hose MegaFlo® Breather and our newest KrakenEXO SUPER II™.

Do Mercedes Textiles hose products meet the latest NFPA 1961 requirements?

We take fire hose standards seriously – because YOU are on the line, and that matters to us. Mercedes is committed to ensuring every hose we manufacture meets or exceeds the latest NFPA 1960 (1961) standard. We have all the necessary testing equipment for each requirement, including the new UL-19 Radiant Heat testing required as of March 2021.

Have Mercedes Textiles products been third-party tested & approved?

UL & ULC LISTINGS
On top of our own internal testing, we go above and beyond for many of our attack hose lines by submitting them to Underwriters Laboratory (UL) for third-party testing and approval. UL provides safety-related certification, validation, testing, inspection, auditing, advising and training services for fire hose products. Mercedes is world-renown for the premium quality, detailed specifications and superior performance of our fire hose.

FM APPROVAL
The international insurance carrier FM Global provides an independent testing division. Using scientific research and testing, FM Approvals make sure products conform to the highest standards for safety and property loss prevention. They follow five steps to make sure the products they’re testing meet quality guidelines. Products that pass get the “FM APPROVED” mark.

What is the warranty on Mercedes Textiles fire hose?
